Private Licensed Guide
This 4-hour private tour will let you discover a secret part of Milan: the exclusive visit of the Sforza Castle, the rooftop and its battlements, the ‘Merlata’ – in Italian.
The itinerary of your private tour begins at the main entrance of the Sforza Castle at the ‘Cairoli Square’, where you will meet your private licensed guide – The castle was built by the Sforza Family in the 15th Century as their residence and fortress, with contributions of several engineers and architects.
The tour is very exclusive, our guides are some of the very few licensed to operate this service on the rooftops – the only available accesses are at 10:30am and 3:00pm – Your private guide will be entirely dedicated to you, not for a group visit. Please note that the museums are unfortunately closed on Mondays. On the first part of the tour, you will go to the rooftop for a visit of the battlements, which are the result of the restoration started by Luca Beltrami in 1893, after being damaged during the centuries of foreign domination of Milan. From the battlements, you will enter into Carmine and Santo Spirito Towers, which contain six vaulted rooms, used as prisons, they were lowered in the 1500s and then again by the Austrians in 1848. The current roofing is the work of Beltrami, who restored the towers to their original height following the project documentation made by the French engineering corps in 1800. Today the towers host the Sforza Art Library.
After that, together with your guide, you will reach the ‘open to public’ area of the Sforza Castle, which includes a guided tour of the gardens, the courtyards and the interiors. During the visit, you will see two different souls of the castle: outside you could learn about the defensive methods and structure of the XV Century, used to keep invulnerable the fortress for centuries. On the other hand, inside the museums, you will able to see paintings regarding the history of the Sforza Family members and their court life – above all, Galeazzo Maria and Ludovico il Moro.
The guided visit with your private guide will end here, you can enjoy some free time in the Castle courtyard, or the green and vibrant ‘Sempione Park’.
TRANSPORTATION: The itinerary described here is designed as a ‘walking-tour’. If you wish, it is possible to include a private transportation service, operated with an elegant sedan, minivan or minibus. Your private driver will collect you from your hotel (or other location in the city) and take you back at the end of the tour. You can add the option on the right of the page where you see ‘Private transportation’.
