Out of the tourism routes, a tour to the elegant and charming Lake Maggiore and the picturesque Lake Orta. The tour will begin with your private driver collecting you from your hotel in Milan (or another custom location in the area) with a luxury sedan or minivan, after a 1.5hr drive you will reach Stresa, our first stop. From there, after a walking tour of the old town, together with your private driver will reach the beautiful and ‘secret’ town of Mergozzo, facing the homonymous lake, where you can enjoy some free time for sightseeing and an authentic Italian coffee time in one of the family-run cafés, overlooking the lake.
After that, the tour will proceed with a transfer to Lake Orta San Giulio, selected as one of the most beautiful Italian villages with quality heritage, by ‘I borghi più belli d’Italia’ . The village has an ancient history dated back to the Roman Age, the Latin name of the lake was “Cusius”, it was modified during the medieval period in “Lago di San Giulio” (the lake was dedicated to S. Julius). The name Orta is a modification of the Latin “hortus conclusus”. Nowadays, the area is locally called “Cusio” – deriving from the latin name of the lake. The present buildings were mostly built from the 16th to the 18th centuries, the most famous ones are the ‘broletto‘, Casa Monti Caldara, Casa Bossi and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
There, you can enjoy some free time for lunch and sightseeing on your own, after that, using one of the convenient water-taxi services, you will be able to visit one of the most remarkable sites of Orta: the ‘San Giulio’ Island, located just in front of the town. A 275 by 140 meter little island which hosts a Benedictine monastery and only few other ancient buildings. Quiet and peaceful location, where you can also find a small chapel erected in the 5th century to commemorate Saint Julius, who had died there.
After your visit of the island, the tour will the conclude with a 1.5hr transfer back to your hotel in Milan.
